We use this firewall solution in our projects as a firewall but also as a VPN gateway.
pfSense offers you a powerful, flexible platform for firewall and routing. The free open source software was specially developed for use as a firewall or router.
The software can also be used on embedded systems as it has low performance requirements. pfSense is completely open source and can be used without licence costs.
pfSense is aimed at smaller embedded systems that require few hardware resources. pfSense is controlled entirely via a web interface. All configuration data is stored in an XML file. Instead of the ipfilter, "pf" is used. There is SSH access with direct shell access. pfSense can be extended with many packages, for example with the web proxy (Squid), IDS (Snort) and much more. Multiple WAN connections for simple load balancing or failover scenarios are also possible.
