MOBILE FORENSICS

Root in Android forensics

The term „root“ is often associated with unlocking or modifying an Android device. In professional IT forensics, however, the aim is not to alter a smartphone, but – insofar as technically and legally permissible – to gain access to data areas that cannot be accessed with normal user rights.

OUR APPROACH

This is how your examination will be carried out

A transparent process – from the initial enquiry to the handover of the report.

1
The choice of extraction method is always made on a case-by-case basis. Root is not used as standard, but is only considered if it offers demonstrable technical added value for the investigation.

LIMITATIONS & CONCLUSION

What you should know

Modern Android devices feature bootloader protection, Verified Boot, hardware encryption and other security features. These can prevent or significantly restrict root access.

Root access is not an end in itself. In mobile IT forensics, it is one possible technical option, the usefulness of which depends on the device, the operating system and the aim of the investigation.

Is root access required for every test?
No. Many analyses can be carried out without root access.
Can any Android device be rooted?
No. Modern security measures often prevent or make this difficult.
Does rooting mean you’ll lose your data?
No. Professional forensic investigators assess measures carefully and document the procedure.
Is rooting legal?
The legal assessment depends on the specific mandate and the powers involved.
Why isn’t root always used?
Because other extraction methods are often sufficient, or because root extraction is not technically feasible.
