MOBILE FORENSICS

Full File System (FFS) in mobile IT forensics

Full-file-system (FFS) extraction is one of the most important techniques in modern mobile forensics. The aim is to capture the entire file system of a smartphone, as far as technically possible. This provides significantly more information than a purely logical data backup.

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

Technical Fundamentals

Many digital traces are not found in visible user data, but in app directories, configuration files, logs and databases. An FFS extraction can make these artefacts available for subsequent analysis.

OUR APPROACH

This is how your examination will be carried out

A transparent process – from the initial enquiry to the handover of the report.

1
Before each investigation, we assess whether FFS extraction is technically feasible and appropriate for the research question at hand. The recovered artefacts are then analysed using specialised tools and documented in a transparent manner.

TYPICAL QUESTIONS

When is this analysis required?

LIMITATIONS & CONCLUSION

What you should know

FFS extraction is not possible on every device. Modern encryption, Secure Enclave, TrustZone, manufacturer-specific customisations and the latest operating system versions may limit the scope of the analysis. However, the absence of FFS does not mean that a meaningful investigation is impossible.

Full-file-system extraction is one of the most powerful techniques in mobile IT forensics. It often enables a much more in-depth analysis than a purely logical data backup and, in many cases, forms the basis for a thorough technical assessment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Click on a question to see the answer.

Is FFS available on every smartphone?

No. Technical feasibility depends on the device, the operating system and the security mechanisms.

Is FFS always better than a logical extraction?

Not necessarily. The appropriate method depends on the specific problem.

Is data deleted using FFS automatically recovered?

No. An FFS extraction provides a comprehensive data set, but does not replace the subsequent forensic analysis.

Why are SQLite, WAL and SHM files important?

They often contain information that may be relevant to reconstructing events or analysing apps.

Is an FFS extraction admissible in court?

If carried out and documented correctly, it can form part of an expert report that is admissible in court.
