ADB consists of a client, a background service (ADB Server) and a service on the Android device (adbd). This usually requires USB debugging to be enabled and the connected computer to be authorised.

Before using ADB, a check is carried out to ensure that its use is compatible with the requirements of a forensic investigation. Appropriate, traceable steps are then carried out and fully documented. In addition to ADB, other recognised IT forensic tools and manual analyses are used, depending on the case.

LIMITATIONS & CONCLUSION

What you should know

ADB does not allow a complete data backup of every Android device. Modern security mechanisms, disabled USB debugging, lack of authorisation or device encryption can significantly restrict access. These technical limitations are clearly set out in the report.

ADB is an important tool in Android forensics, but it is no substitute for a full physical or file-system-based extraction. The information that can be obtained always depends on the specific device configuration.
