IT Forensics for Insurance Companies – Claims Investigated Digitally and Impartially

As IT forensic experts, we assist insurance companies with the technical investigation of claims – from the initial plausibility check, through cyber insurance claims and business interruption claims, to the preparation of counter-reports and legal proceedings.

We place particular emphasis on a transparent methodology, an objective investigation into the circumstances of the damage and the documented condition of the system, as well as documentation that can be used for recourse investigations, counter-assessments and legal proceedings.

BASICS OF CLAIMS ASSESSMENT

How IT forensic investigations are conducted in insurance claims

We investigate cyber insurance claims, business interruptions and the alleged sequence of events leading to the loss, as well as suspected cases of digital manipulation. Data integrity is documented using cryptographic hash values, ensuring that every step of the investigation remains reproducible and that both incriminating and exonerating findings can be verified against the same technical standards.

OUR APPROACH

This is how your examination will be carried out

A transparent process – from the initial enquiry to the handover of the report.

1
We clarify the issue with the insurance company – for example, by assessing the plausibility of how a claim arose, investigating a cyber insurance claim or preparing a counter-assessment – and identify which digital traces may help to resolve the matter.
2
The devices, data storage media and documents provided are secured in a manner that meets legal requirements; hash values document data integrity throughout the process and enable subsequent verification.
3
The alleged sequence of events leading to the damage is objectively investigated on the basis of timestamps, system status and other digital evidence – without prejudging the outcome.
4
In cases of suspected tampering, duplicate insurance or contradictory information, we analyse device, account and communication records and explicitly state what cannot be substantiated on the basis of this evidence.
5
The findings are documented in a clear and comprehensible report which can be used as a technical basis for indemnity claims, counter-reports or legal proceedings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Click on a question to see the answer.

How can an insurance company have the alleged sequence of events leading to the claim objectively verified using digital evidence?
In the case of more extensive or technically complex damage, photographs, invoices and descriptions alone are not always sufficient. Digital evidence can help to independently reconstruct the chronology of events, the system’s state and the actual sequence of events.
Why is an independent IT forensic reconstruction particularly important in the case of a cyber insurance claim worth millions?
The greater the damage, the more important it is to carry out an investigation whose outcome is not predetermined. What is crucial are verifiable technical facts and clearly defined limits to the findings.
How can a suspected case of digital manipulation be investigated without prejudging the outcome?
A suspicion of tampering must not become the objective of the investigation, namely „to prove tampering“. Otherwise, there is a risk of confirmation bias rather than forensic analysis.
How can an insurance company prepare a counter-report without simply looking for errors made by the other expert?
A well-reasoned counter-report does not set out to refute an existing report, but rather to re-examine the key issue of evidence.
