What does the ‚Read-only‘ error message on a memory card mean in terms of data recovery?
If an SD card displays the message „The media is write-protected“, there are three possible causes: the slide switch on the adapter, a write protection set by software, or – as is often the case – a controller that has permanently switched to read-only mode due to worn-out memory cells.
Technical background
Flash memory can only withstand a limited number of write cycles. If the controller detects too many defective blocks, it protects the existing data by refusing further write operations. The data is often still readable at this stage – but will not remain reliable for much longer.
What you should – and shouldn’t – do now
- Check the slide switch and replace the adapter.
- If it is still read-only: copy all the data straight away; do not format it.
- Do not use any „remove write protection“ tools that involve low-level formatting.
Here’s how we do it
- Creation of a complete image, provided the card is legible.
- Reconstruction of the file system on the image.
- In the event of reading errors: repeated, careful reading of problematic sections and documentation of unreadable blocks.
- In the event of read errors, where necessary: read out at controller or chip level, provided this is technically feasible.
Borders
- Worn-out cells can result in individual damaged files.
- If the controller fails completely, access is only possible via the chips – though this is not the case for every type of card.
Possible results
Recovered files and a warning that the card should no longer be used.
How we carry out data recovery
Every data storage device is first diagnosed in our own laboratory in Cologne; the diagnosis is free of charge. You will then receive a written quote and can decide whether to accept it. If you decline, you can collect the data storage device from the laboratory by appointment – there are no postage costs involved – or we will post it back to you; in which case postage and packaging costs may apply. Data is recovered from copies, not from the original – using professional data recovery hardware such as the PC-3000. If a drive needs to be opened, this is carried out on a HEPA H14-filtered clean bench. We do not offer a guarantee of success prior to diagnosis, as this is simply not possible in a professional context. Your storage device and your data will remain confidential and will not be passed on to third parties.
