Forensic analysis of systemd sockets – checking event-driven activation of services
systemd socket units enable event-driven activation of services, whereby an associated service is only started once a connection is actually established on the configured socket.
This delayed activation may be of forensic relevance, as an associated service may appear to be inactive at the time of the investigation, even though a corresponding socket configuration exists and can be activated.
Why LanCologne?
Since its foundation, LanCologne has specialised in professional IT forensics. Our staff have decades of experience in the field of information technology and assist companies, solicitors, private individuals and, on a regular basis, the courts in the technical investigation of complex digital matters.
The examination is, as a matter of principle, carried out exclusively on a forensic copy, a forensic image or a data source captured in a technically equivalent manner that preserves the integrity of the evidence. The original evidence remains unchanged and is stored in a manner that preserves its integrity.
Our services
We identify existing socket units and the associated service units – some of which may not yet have been activated – and check under what conditions automatic activation would take place.
Typical areas of application
This is how a systemd socket analysis works
Once the backup has been completed, existing socket units are identified and assigned to the relevant service units. The system checks which ports or paths a socket is listening on and which service would be activated upon an incoming connection. Any unusual or atypical configurations are investigated separately.
Why is socket analysis relevant in a forensic context?
A service configured via a socket unit, which can be activated as and when required, can be used as a form of hidden backdoor that only becomes active when contact is actually made and can therefore easily be overlooked.
Comprehensive identification of such configurations is therefore part of a thorough assessment of a system’s network exposure and potential persistence mechanisms.
