Forensic Analysis of macOS SQLite Databases – Evaluating the Database, WAL and SHM Together
SQLite is used by numerous macOS and third-party applications for local data storage. Depending on the journal mode, write-ahead log (WAL) files and shared memory (SHM) files, in particular, may be relevant for forensic analysis, in addition to the main database.
An isolated copy of the main database alone may result in an incomplete set of data. It is therefore essential to record related database files in a manner that ensures their integrity and to take their technical interrelationships into account.
Why LanCologne?
Since its foundation, LanCologne has specialised in professional IT forensics. Our staff have decades of experience in the field of information technology and assist companies, solicitors, private individuals and, on a regular basis, the courts in the technical investigation of complex digital matters.
The examination is, as a matter of principle, carried out exclusively on a forensic copy, a forensic image or a data source captured in a technically equivalent manner that preserves the integrity of the evidence. The original evidence remains unchanged and is stored in a manner that preserves its integrity.
Our services
We always analyse SQLite databases in the context of the accompanying files. Schemas, tables, data types and relevant data records are documented; WAL contents are taken into account in a professional manner, without altering the original database by opening it in an uncontrolled manner.
Deleted content or content that is no longer referenced is only presented as a finding if its technical origin and integrity can be traced.
Typical areas of application
This is how the forensic investigation is carried out
Following the forensic backup, the main database, WAL, SHM and other associated files are inventoried and hashed together. The analysis is carried out on working copies.
First, the logical state of the database is analysed. The WAL and, where applicable, other data areas are then checked for any additional relevant information. Reconstructed data records are clearly distinguished from normally active data records.
Why is this area of investigation relevant to forensics?
SQLite is one of the most important data sources for modern macOS applications. WAL files, in particular, may contain transactions that are not yet, or are no longer, visible in the main database when viewed in isolation.
It is therefore crucial from a forensic perspective to ensure that data is recorded in full, that analysis is reproducible, and that a clear distinction is made between the active dataset and reconstructed fragments.
