MOBILE FORENSICS

Rooting from the perspective of Android forensics

Root access provides extended access to the Android operating system. For IT forensics, rooted devices present both an opportunity and a challenge, as they open up additional investigative possibilities whilst, at the same time, potentially raising questions regarding data integrity and traceability.

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

Technical Fundamentals

Rooting grants a user or application privileged system rights. The technical implications vary depending on the device, Android version and rooting method.

Forensic aspects:

  • Root privileges
  • Magisk and similar solutions
  • Changes to system partitions
  • Bootloader and Verified Boot
  • Root artefacts
  • SafetyNet or Play Integrity
  • File system accesses
  • Manufacturer-specific features

Not every rooted device exhibits the same changes.

OUR APPROACH

This is how your examination will be carried out

A transparent process – from the initial enquiry to the handover of the report.

1
The first step is to check for any evidence of rooting or system modifications. Root artefacts, boot configurations and relevant system files are then analysed using recognised IT forensic tools as well as manually. All findings are documented in a reproducible manner and assessed solely on the basis of technical facts.
2
LanCologne produces expert reports for private individuals, as well as for companies and solicitors. Our reports have already been used in court proceedings. In some cases, we have been directly commissioned to produce IT forensic reports. Upon request, we can provide anonymised or redacted sample reports or extracts.

TYPICAL QUESTIONS

When is this analysis required?

  • Is a device rooted?
  • Which rooting method was used?
  • Which system changes can be verified?
  • What are the implications for the preservation of evidence and data integrity?
  • What technical conclusions can be drawn?

LIMITATIONS & CONCLUSION

What you should know

Root access does not automatically mean that the device has been tampered with. Conversely, a non-rooted device may also show signs of tampering. Each assessment is based on the evidence found and the overall technical context.

Determining whether root access has been granted is a key part of many Android investigations. Only by combining various pieces of evidence is it possible to draw a reliable conclusion about the technical condition of a device.
