MOBILE FORENSICS

Forensic analysis of Android notifications

Notifications are among the most frequently overlooked elements of an Android forensic investigation. They can provide clues about incoming messages, calls, app activity and system events. However, their significance only becomes apparent when correlated with other technical findings.

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

Technical Fundamentals

Android processes notifications via various system components. Depending on the Android version and device configuration, different artefacts may be present.

Information relevant to forensic investigations may include, amongst other things:

  • Notification history
  • Notification logs
  • App-specific notifications
  • Messenger notifications
  • Timestamp
  • Application package names
  • System logs
  • SQLite databases
  • Cache and configuration files

The type and scope of the available data vary depending on the manufacturer, the version of Android and the permissions of the installed apps.

OUR APPROACH

This is how your examination will be carried out

A transparent process – from the initial enquiry to the handover of the report.

1
Following a suitable forensic data backup, communication artefacts are examined using recognised IT forensic tools and manual analysis. Timestamps are correlated with messenger databases, system logs and other artefacts. All stages of the investigation are documented in a reproducible manner and evaluated solely on the basis of objective technical findings.
2
LanCologne produces expert reports for private individuals, as well as for companies and solicitors. Our reports have already been used in court proceedings. In some cases, we have been directly commissioned to produce IT forensic reports. Upon request, we can provide anonymised or redacted sample reports or extracts.

TYPICAL QUESTIONS

When is this analysis required?

  • Which notifications were displayed?
  • Which application generated the notification?
  • When was a notification received?
  • Is it possible to trace deleted messages indirectly?
  • How meaningful are notification artefacts?

LIMITATIONS & CONCLUSION

What you should know

Notifications are not stored permanently. Depending on the Android version, manufacturer, app configuration or system clean-up, relevant information may already have been overwritten or deleted. Individual notifications should therefore not be assessed in isolation.

Notification artefacts can usefully supplement the reconstruction of events. When combined with other data sources, they help to provide a technically verifiable representation of communication and usage patterns.
