Signal forensics – Analysis of encrypted communications on smartphones
Signal is regarded as one of the most privacy-focused messaging services and is used for both personal and professional purposes. End-to-end encryption and a data-efficient architecture place particular demands on IT forensic investigations. The aim is to carry out an objective analysis of the traces present on the end device, whilst taking technical limitations into account.

Signal only stores a limited amount of communication data locally. The data that can be analysed depends, amongst other things, on the operating system, the app version, the device model and the backups in place. A reputable investigation therefore always documents these technical limitations as well.

What you should know
Signal is designed with privacy in mind and deliberately stores only a limited portion of communications permanently on the device. Which chats, media and metadata can actually be analysed depends on the operating system, app version, device model and existing backups – a complete reconstruction is not always possible. Encryption primarily protects the transmission; from a forensic perspective, the focus is on the data stored locally on the end device, which we document in a traceable manner.
