MOBILE FORENSICS

Mobile artefacts – location data in IT forensics

Location data is among the most revealing types of data generated by modern smartphones. It can provide clues as to where a device was at a specific point in time or which places were visited regularly. Location information does not come exclusively from GPS data, but from a variety of technical sources.

OUR APPROACH

This is how your examination will be carried out

A transparent process – from the initial enquiry to the handover of the report.

1
We analyse all available location-related data and compare it with photographs, EXIF metadata, calendar entries, messaging app communications, browser histories and other smartphone data. The aim is to produce a transparent and reproducible reconstruction of the facts.

TYPICAL QUESTIONS

When is this analysis required?

  • Was the smartphone in a specific location at a specific time?
  • Which places were visited regularly?
  • Do location details match the photos or messages?
  • Is it possible to reconstruct movement patterns?
  • Which apps have stored location data?

LIMITATIONS & CONCLUSION

What you should know

Location data varies in accuracy and may be incomplete. GPS reception, building structures, disabled location services, cloud synchronisation and privacy settings all affect the available data. For this reason, multiple data sources are always evaluated.

Location data is among the most important forms of digital evidence in mobile IT forensics. However, it is only by combining various technical sources that a reliable assessment can be made and hasty conclusions avoided.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Click on a question to see the answer.

Is GPS data always available?
No. Storage depends on the device settings, the apps you use and the permissions granted.
Is WLAN information also location data?
Yes. Known WLAN networks can provide clues as to a person’s whereabouts and often supplement GPS information.
How accurate is location data?
The accuracy depends on the source in question and can range from a few metres to significantly greater deviations.
Can location data be manipulated?
Depending on the circumstances, changes may be possible. For this reason, various artefacts are compared with one another and checked for plausibility.
Is GPS data alone sufficient for an expert report?
Generally speaking, no. A reliable assessment always takes into account other technical and content-related factors.
