MOBILE FORENSICS

Timeline analysis

A timeline is one of the most important tools in IT forensics. It is used to collate events from different data sources chronologically and organise them into a coherent sequence. This often makes it much easier to assess complex situations than by examining individual files or messages.

OUR APPROACH

This is how your examination will be carried out

A transparent process – from the initial enquiry to the handover of the report.

1
Following a forensic data backup, all relevant timestamps are identified and assessed in terms of their origin. The data from various artefacts are then compared with one another and consolidated into a clear chronological representation.
2
LanCologne prepares private expert reports on behalf of private individuals, companies and solicitors, as well as expert reports in connection with court-ordered investigations. Our investigations have already been used in various court proceedings. Furthermore, in some cases we have been directly commissioned to prepare IT forensic reports. All findings are documented transparently and supported by technical justification.

LIMITATIONS & CONCLUSION

What you should know

Timestamps can be affected by time zones, synchronisation processes or system settings. Consequently, they are never assessed in isolation, but always in conjunction with other technical artefacts.

A forensic timeline enables the structured reconstruction of digital events and presents complex technical relationships in a clear and understandable way. It is often an essential component of a digital forensics report.

Frequently Asked Questions

Click on a question to see the answer.

Why are multiple data sources combined?
Only by correlating various artefacts is it possible to establish a reliable chronological framework.
Are timestamps always accurate?
Not necessarily. They must be assessed within the overall technical context.
Can a timeline reveal any tampering?
It can highlight inconsistencies or anomalies, which are then assessed from a technical perspective.
Is cloud data also taken into account?
Provided they are available and relevant to the research question, they may be included in the analysis.
Is the timeline included in the report?
Yes. Provided it is necessary for the purpose of the enquiry, it will be documented in a way that is easy to follow.
