AirDrop artefacts

AirDrop combines Bluetooth for device detection with a direct WLAN connection for data transfer. Communication is encrypted.

As part of an investigation, available AirDrop-related artefacts are analysed alongside other system and application data. Logs, metadata and timestamps are correlated to provide a clear picture of the technical relationships. All results are documented in a way that allows them to be reproduced.

What you should know

Whether AirDrop traces are present, and to what extent, depends, amongst other things, on the version of iOS, the time the backup was taken, the type of backup and the available logs. The absence of such traces does not allow for a blanket conclusion that no transfer took place.

AirDrop artefacts can provide valuable clues about file transfers and device interactions. However, their evidential value only becomes apparent when assessed in conjunction with other forensic artefacts.
