How can a haulage company access its fleet management data following a Server failure?
Fleet management and dispatch systems usually store orders, routes, telematics data and driving times in an SQL database on a local Server. If this fails, day-to-day operations come to a standstill – and the crucial factor then is how quickly a consistent database snapshot can be restored.
Technical background
Often, it is not the database itself that is corrupted, but the storage medium, the RAID or the operating system. Modern databases maintain a transaction log; this often makes it possible to restore a consistent state right up to shortly before the failure. Some telematics data is also stored with the telematics provider.
What you should – and shouldn’t – do now
- Do not restart Server repeatedly, and do not carry out a database repair without a backup.
- Check with the telematics or software provider to find out what additional data is stored in the cloud.
- Determine the last successful backup and the time it was taken.
Here’s how we do it
- Backing up the Server data carriers as raw images.
- Reconstruction of the RAID and file system.
- Extraction of database and transaction log files and checking their consistency on a copy.
- Delivery in a format that the software provider can import.
Borders
- There are no transactions that had not yet been written at the time of the failure.
- Proprietary data formats may require consultation with the software manufacturer.
Possible results
Database files and – where possible – an indication of the last consistent state.
How we carry out data recovery
Every data storage device is first diagnosed in our own laboratory in Cologne; the diagnosis is free of charge. You will then receive a written quote and can decide whether to accept it. If you decline, you can collect the data storage device from the laboratory by appointment – there are no postage costs involved – or we will post it back to you; in which case postage and packaging costs may apply. Data is recovered from copies, not from the original – using professional data recovery hardware such as the PC-3000. If a drive needs to be opened, this is carried out on a HEPA H14-filtered clean bench. We do not offer a guarantee of success prior to diagnosis, as this is simply not possible in a professional context. Your storage device and your data will remain confidential and will not be passed on to third parties.
