MOBILE FORENSICS

Mobile devices – Downloads in IT forensics

Downloaded files are among the most common digital traces found on smartphones. Documents, images, archives, apps and other content can provide insights into how a device is used. In addition to the files themselves, metadata and download histories are of particular forensic significance.

OUR APPROACH

This is how your examination will be carried out

A transparent process – from the initial enquiry to the handover of the report.

1
We analyse download directories, browser and app databases, and file metadata. The results are correlated with browser artefacts, communication data, cloud information and timestamps, and are documented in a traceable manner.

TYPICAL QUESTIONS

When is this analysis required?

  • Which files were downloaded?
  • When was the download carried out?
  • What is the source of the file?
  • Was the file opened, moved or deleted?
  • Are there any other copies stored in cloud services or messaging apps?

LIMITATIONS & CONCLUSION

What you should know

Not every application stores complete download information. Files may have been deleted, moved or altered by synchronisation processes. The assessment is therefore always carried out in conjunction with other artefacts.

Downloads often provide valuable insights into a smartphone’s internet activity and data exchange. Their informative value increases significantly when combined with other digital traces.

Can deleted downloads be recovered?

Depending on the device, file system and the state of the data, deleted files or fragments may still be present.

Are download timestamps admissible as evidence?

Yes. They can play an important role in reconstructing chronological sequences.

Why are downloads compared with browser data?

Combining different pieces of evidence enhances the validity and credibility of the forensic assessment.
