TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

Technical Fundamentals

In a forensic investigation, it is often not enough to examine only the visible content of a smartphone or computer. A great deal of information is stored in the background in SQLite databases. Depending on the application in question, these may contain, for example, messages, contacts, timestamps, settings or technical metadata.

Analysing this data helps to gain a better understanding of communication processes, to place events in chronological order and to document technical relationships in a clear and comprehensible manner.

LIMITATIONS & CONCLUSION

What you should know

Not all information is permanently stored in a database. Applications are constantly updating their data sets. Furthermore, data structures vary depending on the operating system, app version and manufacturer. For this reason, the scope and significance of an investigation may vary from case to case. A reputable IT forensic assessment therefore describes not only the findings but also the technical limitations of the analysis.

No. Whether information is still available depends on the technical circumstances of each individual case.
Is only one database being examined?
