Technical documentation and reproducibility

An IT forensic report can only be verified in the long term if all stages of the investigation are carefully documented. The technical documentation makes it possible to trace the course of the investigation and to reproduce the results – insofar as this is technically possible.

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

Technical Fundamentals

Courts, solicitors and clients must be able to understand how a result was reached. For this reason, the tools used, software versions, backup methods, relevant artefacts and all key investigative steps are documented.

OUR APPROACH

This is how your examination will be carried out

A transparent process – from the initial enquiry to the handover of the report.

1
Every stage of the process is documented – from the receipt of the evidence to the final assessment. The aim is to provide a transparent account of the investigation so that the results can be understood and technically contextualised.
2
LanCologne prepares private expert reports on behalf of private individuals, companies and solicitors, as well as expert reports in the context of court-ordered investigations. Our investigations have already been used in various court proceedings. Furthermore, in certain cases we have been directly commissioned to prepare IT forensic reports. Upon request, anonymised and redacted extracts from our case history can be provided.

LIMITATIONS & CONCLUSION

What you should know

Not every step in the investigation can be reproduced exactly, for example if cloud content or device statuses have changed in the meantime. Such factors are documented and taken into account during the assessment.
