MOBILE FORENSICS

The evidential value of digital artefacts

Digital artefacts form the basis of virtually every IT forensic investigation. They are generated through the use of a smartphone and may contain information about communications, locations, files or system activities. However, it is not merely their existence that is crucial, but their technical significance in the relevant context.

OUR APPROACH

This is how your examination will be carried out

A transparent process – from the initial enquiry to the handover of the report.

1
All relevant artefacts are first assessed in terms of their origin and technical plausibility. They are then cross-referenced with other data sources in order to present any contradictions or correspondences in a clear and comprehensible manner.
2
LanCologne prepares private expert reports on behalf of private individuals, companies and solicitors, as well as expert reports in the context of court-ordered investigations. Our investigations have already been used in various court proceedings. Furthermore, in some cases we have been directly commissioned to prepare IT forensic reports. The aim is always to provide an objective assessment of the available technical evidence.

LIMITATIONS & CONCLUSION

What you should know

Not every artefact is equally informative. Missing data, synchronisation processes, time zones or device-specific characteristics may influence the assessment. These aspects are explained clearly in the report.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a single timestamp sufficient evidence?
Not usually. It is only by combining several artefacts that a reliable assessment can be made.
Why are different data sources being compared?
To enhance the technical plausibility of findings.
Can metadata be changed?
Changes may occur depending on the type of data. For this reason, metadata is always assessed within the overall context.
Are system files also scanned?
Yes, provided they are relevant to the question.
How is the probative value described?
Through a transparent technical assessment of the existing artefacts.
