How can a company recover call recordings from a failed VoIP or telephone system?
Depending on the system, VoIP telephone systems store call recordings, voicemails and call logs on an internal SSD or memory card, a connected NAS, or in the provider’s cloud. If the system fails, locally stored recordings can only be accessed via the storage medium.
Technical background
Many systems are based on Linux; recordings are stored as WAV, MP3 or GSM files, whilst metadata (phone numbers, times) is stored in a database or included in file names. In the case of hosted systems, the data is held by the provider; retention periods are determined by them.
What you should – and shouldn’t – do now
- Do not reset the unit to its factory settings.
- Check with the provider to see whether recordings are also stored in the cloud or on a NAS.
- Clarify the legal admissibility of the analysis (consent, co-determination) in advance.
Here’s how we do it
- Identifying the location and securing the data carrier.
- Reconstruction of the file system and extraction of audio files and metadata.
- Mapping of the recordings to specific times and telephone numbers, where available.
Borders
- Deleted and overwritten recordings cannot be recovered.
- We do not have access to the provider’s infrastructure; exports must be carried out via the provider.
Possible results
Recovered records with available metadata.
How we carry out data recovery
Every data storage device is first diagnosed in our own laboratory in Cologne; the diagnosis is free of charge. You will then receive a written quote and can decide whether to accept it. If you decline, you can collect the data storage device from the laboratory by appointment – there are no postage costs involved – or we will post it back to you; in which case postage and packaging costs may apply. Data is recovered from copies, not from the original – using professional data recovery hardware such as the PC-3000. If a drive needs to be opened, this is carried out on a HEPA H14-filtered clean bench. We do not offer a guarantee of success prior to diagnosis, as this is simply not possible in a professional context. Your storage device and your data will remain confidential and will not be passed on to third parties.
