Data Recovery · LanCologne

What happens to my original data storage device once the data recovery has been successfully completed?

Once the data has been recovered, there are three issues to clarify: what happens to the original data storage medium, what happens to the working copies we hold, and what happens to the donor components that were installed? Each of these questions is relevant when it comes to confidential data.

Technical background

A faulty storage medium still contains your data despite the fault and must therefore not be disposed of without due care. If parts have been replaced, it may contain components from donor devices. Working copies (images) are required for data recovery and will subsequently be deleted as agreed.

What you should – and shouldn’t – do now

  • Before placing your order, please decide whether you would like the data storage device returned to you.
  • For businesses: Communicate the requirements set out in data protection regulations and internal data deletion policies.
  • Check the recovered data as soon as possible and back it up yourself.

Here’s how we do it

  • Return of the original, if requested, together with the target medium.
  • Alternatively, supervised data storage media destruction in our own laboratory – including written confirmation of destruction (certificate of destruction).
  • Deletion of the working copies once the agreed period has expired.

Borders

  • A returned, faulty original is not suitable for data backup.
  • Once the working copies have been deleted, it is no longer possible to resend the data.

Possible results

Clear documentation of where the originals, copies and recovered data are located.

How we carry out data recovery

Every data storage device is first diagnosed in our own laboratory in Cologne; the diagnosis is free of charge. You will then receive a written quote and can decide whether to accept it. If you decline, you can collect the data storage device from the laboratory by appointment – there are no postage costs involved – or we will post it back to you; in which case postage and packaging costs may apply. Data is recovered from copies, not from the original – using professional data recovery hardware such as the PC-3000. If a drive needs to be opened, this is carried out on a HEPA H14-filtered clean bench. We do not offer a guarantee of success prior to diagnosis, as this is simply not possible in a professional context. Your storage device and your data will remain confidential and will not be passed on to third parties.

1Enquiries and submission by post or in person at the laboratory by prior appointment
2Free diagnosis of the cause of the damage
3Written quotation – we will only proceed once you have approved it; if you decline, you may collect the item from the laboratory or we will return it to you (postage and packaging costs may apply)
4Recovery, data verification and confidential handover
