Viele moderne Apps verwenden SQLite. Messenger speichern ihre Informationen häufig in einer oder mehreren SQLite-Datenbanken. Werden diese Datenbanken im WAL-Modus betrieben, kann die WAL-Datei zusätzliche Informationen enthalten, die zum Zeitpunkt der Sicherung noch nicht in die eigentliche Datenbank übernommen wurden. Deshalb werden bei einer professionellen IT-forensischen Untersuchung – soweit vorhanden – grundsätzlich Hauptdatenbank, WAL- und SHM-Datei gemeinsam betrachtet.

Nicht jede WAL- oder SHM-Datei enthält zusätzliche, forensisch relevante Informationen – ob und welche Daten sich darin befinden, hängt vom Zeitpunkt der Sicherung und dem Nutzungsverhalten der jeweiligen App ab. Not generally speaking. Depending on the individual case, additional information may be available – but there is no guarantee.

Should you back up WAL and SHM files?
