MOBILE FORENSICS
Mobile artefacts – text messages in IT forensics
Despite the widespread use of modern messaging apps, text messages remain an important part of a mobile IT forensic investigation. They often play a key role, particularly when it comes to authentication codes, notifications from banks or public authorities, and older communication histories.
OUR APPROACH
This is how your examination will be carried out
A transparent process – from the initial enquiry to the handover of the report.
TYPICAL QUESTIONS
When is this analysis required?
- ✔Was a text message actually sent or received?
- ✔Has a message been deleted?
- ✔Can authentication or TAN text messages be verified?
- ✔Do the timestamps match those of other artefacts?
LIMITATIONS & CONCLUSION
What you should know
Not every deleted text message can be recovered. Cloud synchronisation, device settings and the messaging app used all affect the data that is available. Furthermore, RCS messages may be stored separately.
Text messages remain a relevant form of evidence even today. They become particularly telling when cross-referenced with other digital traces from the smartphone.
